McNeese State University is a public university located in Lake Charles, which is the parish seat of Calcasieu Parish, situated in the US state of Louisiana, with a population estimated at a number of more than 71 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Lake Charles is also the principal city of the Lake Charles Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has nearly 195 000 people, living within its limits. Due to the fact that it hosts more than 75 festivals annually, the city was nicknamed the `Festival Capital of Louisiana`.
McNeese State was founded in 1939, first starting as a junior college, and it became known under its current name in 1970, being today part of the University of Louisiana System. Among other educational programs offered, McNeese State is most recognized for its excellent engineering program, including for the nursing program. The university offers its students over 80 degree programs, through various colleges, which include the Colleges of Business, Engineering and Technology, Nursing and Science, and Education.
The athletic teams from McNeese State are known as the Cowboys (men) and the Cowgirls (women), who participate in NCAA’s Division I (Football Championship Subdivision (I-AA) for football) Southland Conference, in various sports, being perhaps best known for their achievements in football, basketball and baseball, in which they’ve achieved most of their notable wins. The football team has played in 2 Division I-AA Finals (’97 and 2002), the basketball team also having 2 appearances, but in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, th most recent being in 2002, qualifying for the NIT twice. The baseball team also contributed to McNeese State’s athletic fame, having several appearances in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, the 2 most recent being in 2000 and 2003.

DeBlanc - Medal of Honor recipient, Bob Howry - Major League Baseball pitcher for the Chicago Cubs, Kelley Gravlee, now known as Brooke Kelley - writer for Glamour magazine and founder of Unify, Andre Dubus - writer of short fiction, including the work ‘’Killings’’ which was adapted into the Oscar-nominated motion picture In the Bedroom, as well as several other people, who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
